What is EPI-TRAK?

The EPI-TRAK | Remember Epinephrine app is a mobile application that was created after realizing the need for a way to not forget our son’s adrenaline injector device. Once we moved out of the “diaper-bag” stage, where all the essentials were always packed, there were countless times we would arrive at our destination only to realize that we had forgotten the adrenaline injector device. EPI-TRAK is designed to help you remember the epinephrine injector device when leaving your house or any other location. The EPI-TRAK Epinephrine reminder app works no matter what injector you use. Our mission is to help parents, teenagers, family members and everyone dependent on injectable epinephrine devices to develop the habit of not forgetting it when they leave.

Our EPI-TRAK Family

We are a food allergy family who was looking for a solution to a problem for our family. We needed a way to help our 12 year old son learn to take more responsibility in managing his allergy. The idea for EPI-TRAK was born. EPI-TRAK became a passion project for us immediately because we have a vested interest in this application. Our son Chase was diagnosed with a peanut allergy at age 4 and thus began our journey of reading all food labels and educating ourselves as well as all our friends and family. Never having had a history of food allergies in our respective families, we had to dive in and learn quickly.

Chase had a minimal reaction when he was younger but at age 6 his allergy elevated to anaphylactic. Thankfully, he has not had an anaphylactic experience so we have found ourselves complacent at times with remembering to bring his epinephrine devices everywhere he went. EPI-TRAK empowers our teen to help himself and us learn to manage his food allergy effectively.

It was easier when we were going to restaurants or parties where he would be eating or be around food, but going to sports practice or on a family hike, we would sometimes forget. As Chase has gotten older we felt we really needed to help him begin to manage his health and help him build the responsibility of always having his epinephrine devices on him.  We knew this “complacentness” could mean life or death for him.  We made signs by our doors and in cars, but even those became part of the scenery. We started carpooling for rides to school and practices so that meant he wasn’t always getting in the car with us to remind him.  Derek, being an IT guy and a “fixer” like your typical male had the idea to develop an app that could help. Our hope is that EPI-TRAK can aid in helping those with anaphylactic allergies remember to always carry their two life-saving epinephrine auto-injectors.

Derek D’Alessandro received his B.S. degree in Technical Communication from Mercer University and received his M.B.A. from University of Florida. Natalie received her B.A. in Communications and Theater Arts from Mercer University.  They reside in sunny Florida with their three children.

EPI-TRAK is an innovative way to leverage technology to help simplify the food allergy life by helping you remember epinephrine when you leave a location. EPI-TRAK uses GPS technology to alert your mobile device when you have exited your set location (example, around 800m from your home). An alarm is triggered and a screen appears with “Remember your epinephrine”.
